a berlin residency

In April this year I was lucky enough to spend time in Berlin on a self initiated residency in one of the most inspiring European cities. My studio in Kreuzberg was a haven of light looking out onto eagerly budding, leafy streets. I barely scratched the surface exploring this vast city, but I did feel a deep nourishment of seeing with fresh eyes. I slowed down, got lost and people watched; explored quiet neighbourhoods and international exhibitions - soaking up the springtime energy of a city newly emerged from winter.

The pieces that I made during this time feel quietly different, they reflect a moment of gentle growth and expansion at the sheer joy and possibility of making elsewhere. They are formed from new clays including a white grogged stoneware, iron flecked buff stoneware and my favourite - a deep toffee brown stoneware called Indian summer. The collection came back to the UK with me and is now on display at Newlyn Art Gallery as part of the Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open. Pieces will soon be available online.

Cornwall Design: The Art of Making is on from 25th June to 1st October 22.
