PRACTICE

Iโ€™ve always been drawn to creating work which has a sense of connection, intimacy or mystery. My forms are simple and organic, resonant with the energy of the natural material and my touch.

MATERIAL

Ceramics are intrinsically alchemic - uniquely combining the elements of earth, water and fire. Every clay responds differently to touch, there are nuances of elasticity, plasticity and surface texture - all contributing to the finished form. When firing, pieces shrink, warp and react to extreme temperatures and mineral glazes; transforming in ways that feel exciting.

I use every part of my hands to build - pinching, sculpting and smoothing. There is an intuitive movement as pieces slowly take shape.

handbuilt ceramic vase

Why are we drawn to certain things?
How do we curate them in our spaces?

โ€œSuch slowly and attentively crafted objects communicate a deep regard for the art of making itself. They express a reverence for materialityโ€” for the cunning of a human hand and for clay as literal body of earth. Through her hand-building, Tor shapes matter in a way that preserves its wildness.โ€
